Application opens: Monday, June 3, 2024

Application Deadline: Friday, July 26

Why TOC? TOC is a recruitment program designed to advance the diversity of student experiences at Carleton. Carleton is strongly committed to enrolling a diverse study body. We believe that it creates invaluable depth to the learning experience we seek to provide our students. For that reason, increasing diversity across Carleton’s campus is a key pillar of our Community Plan for Inclusion, Diversity, and Equity.

Who should apply? Taste of Carleton supports underrepresented students who are interested in the mission of residential liberal arts colleges and care to learn about Carleton. The fully-funded opportunity helps students from underrepresented groups experience our campus and explore their curiosity about Carleton’s academics and community. TOC’s goal is to increase the diversity of students who apply to Carleton. Given cost of travel, TOC is only accepting applications from students residing in the USA.

What does “underrepresented” mean? “Underrepresented” or students who will advance diversity on Carleton’s campus have many different intersectional identities. A few examples are below. This list is not exclusive or exhaustive.

– First generation (first in their family to earn a Bachelor’s degree)

– Low income to middle income

– BIPOC students (students of color)

– Undocumented students

– Students from rural or under-resourced communities

I really enjoyed the freedom in out-of-class scheduling to allow us to explore Carleton on our own and at our own pace, as if we’re real Carls.

I think the people I met were what made this experience amazing for me; everyone I made were very welcoming, friendly, and passionate. I loved Carleton’s student environment and the beautiful campus.

The experience, collaboration, learning, all of it was pretty beautiful. Combined with the campus setting made it an excellent trip.

I loved being able to attend a class and just be on campus. It gave me a nice feel of the environment by just blending in. I also appreciated the freedom to control what I did. I went to different buildings and sometimes had conversations with actual students. I also enjoyed being able to talk with other TOC attendees about more than Carleton.

During TOC, I felt that I belonged the moment I stepped into the Sayles Cafe and the libe. Having lively conversations with other Carls made me feel like I hadn't left my friends in California. Students assured me that even with the challenges of culture shock, I will be able to step out of my comfort zone knowing TRIO and the rest of the community are there to support me.
